Not to be confused with Judas Iscariot, St. Jude Thaddeus was also one of the 12 apostles first chosen by Jesus to follow Him. Known popularly as the patron saint of hopeless, lost, or desperate cases, St. Jude is often invoked when things seem helpless. For this reason, the terminal children's hospital, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, is dedicated to his care in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude earns his patronage from the voice of hope he gives after stating the seemingly impossible state of the world in Scripture. Take in the words of encouragement written in his letter in the New Testament, reassuring us in the victory of Christ: "But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God; wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life...Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his gory with rejoicing, to the only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen." (Jude 1:20-21, 24-25)
