From Nets to Next Steps: Hearing God's Call in Ordinary Time

Even in Ordinary Time, God shows up in extraordinary ways—and He meets us right where we are.

This week on All Set for Sunday, Fr. Rosko joins Scott and Jeff (plus a few yawns and dad jokes) to break open the Scriptures for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, where we’re reminded that Jesus doesn’t wait for us to get it all together before calling us. He walks right into our ordinary, messy lives and invites us to follow Him.

Here’s what stood out this week:

  • Isaiah 8 flips the script: What once was gloom becomes glory. Zebulun and Naphtali, regions once overshadowed, become places where light dawns. God loves a good twist ending!

  • The Responsorial Psalm says it all: “The Lord is my light and my salvation” (Psalm 27). A top-10 banger, according to the guys.

  • In 1 Corinthians, St. Paul begs for unity: no team Apollos vs. team Paul. Christ isn’t divided, so why are we?

  • Matthew 4 recounts Jesus calling His first disciples. He doesn’t interrupt their prayer time—He calls them at work. He meets them where they are and asks them to leave everything and follow.

Fr. Rosko beautifully unpacks how this same call echoes in our lives. God meets us where we are, but He also calls us to leave something behind. The secret to hearing Him? Prayer and silence. A consistent prayer life, not just when we feel like it, but especially when we don’t, is how we train our ears to hear His voice.

In a world that floods us with noise and instant gratification, making space for God in silence might just be the most counter-cultural and freeing thing we can do.
