Jesus doesn’t lower the bar. He raises our hearts.

You Are the Light of the World Reading Jesus doesn’t lower the bar. He raises our hearts. 3 minutes Next Into the Desert: How to Win the Fight This Lent

As we move deeper into Ordinary Time and closer to Lent, this Sunday’s readings challenge us to take our faith seriously, not just on the outside, but all the way to the heart.

Fr. Eric Johnson joins us to unpack readings that do not mince words. And honestly? They are not exactly softball Scriptures.

Here is what is coming at us this Sunday:

Sirach 15:15–20 reminds us that God gives us real freedom: “Before man are life and death, good and evil; whichever he chooses shall be given him.” The choice is ours, and our choices matter.
Psalm 119 keeps it simple: “Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord.” Obedience is not oppression. It is the path to life.
• In 1 Corinthians 2:6–10, St. Paul drops a mic worthy line: “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard… what God has prepared for those who love him.” (2:9). God’s wisdom is bigger than we can imagine, but we need the Spirit to reveal it.
• Then comes Matthew 5:17–37. Jesus does not abolish the law. He fulfills it. And He takes it deeper. It is not just “Do not kill.” It is do not let anger fester. Not just “Do not commit adultery,” but guard your heart.

In other words, holiness begins on the inside.

Fr. Eric points out that most of us have not broken the big commandments in dramatic ways, but who among us has not wrestled with resentment, judgment, or interior monologues that do not reflect Christ?

That is where the real conversion happens.

Jesus is not interested in surface level compliance. He wants our hearts. And that can feel overwhelming, until we remember we are not doing this alone. The Holy Spirit is the One who transforms us. Our role is radical openness. Surrender. A simple prayer: Lord, I desire to please You, even when I do not know how.

As Lent approaches, this Gospel is both a wake up call and an invitation.
Be still. Let God purify the heart. Let Him do what you cannot.
