Anger tells us something is wrong, but this Sunday’s readings challenge us to decide what we’re going to do with it.
On this episode of All Set for Sunday, Scott and Jeff sit down with Fr. McCarthy to unpack the Twenty fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, where Scripture gets wonderfully uncomfortable about anger, mercy, and forgiveness.
Sirach doesn’t mince words: we can’t ask God for mercy while refusing to extend mercy to someone else. Holding onto wrath and resentment weighs us down, while remembering the shortness of life can help us put offenses back into perspective (Sirach 27:30–28:7).
Then comes the refrain we probably need taped to the dashboard during rush hour: “The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion” (Psalm 103).
Fr. McCarthy offers an especially helpful insight into anger: anger is the emotion we experience when we encounter or perceive an injustice. And simply telling ourselves, “I shouldn’t be angry,” usually doesn’t solve anything.
Instead, we have to change our perspective.
Fr. McCarthy encourages us to step back, pray, and recognize the enormous amount of charity, love, grace, and mercy God has already poured into our lives. Gratitude gives us somewhere to go with our anger before it begins building upon itself.
That leads perfectly into Jesus’ parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:21–35). Peter asks whether forgiving someone seven times is enough. Jesus responds: not seven times, but seventy seven times.
Why? Because Christians forgive from the abundance of mercy we’ve already received.
We’re the servant whose impossible debt has been canceled. Once we understand the magnitude of God’s mercy toward us, we can begin extending that same mercy, even when someone genuinely has wronged us.
And yes, that includes the person who doesn’t understand how roundabouts work. 😅
