The Trinity, the Holy Spirit, and the “Group Hug of God”

The Fire of Pentecost Changes Everything Reading The Trinity, the Holy Spirit, and the “Group Hug of God” 2 minutes Next Keep Walking: Faith, Doubt, and the Eucharist

The Trinity isn’t a puzzle to solve. It’s a love we’re invited to live.

This week on All Set for Sunday, Fr. Christian Raab joins Scott and Jeff to unpack one of the most mysterious feasts of the Church year: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.

Instead of trying to “explain” the Trinity with complicated theology diagrams, Fr. Christian focuses on something much more personal: how we experience the Trinity in everyday life.

A few highlights from this week’s conversation:

God the Father creates and lovingly sustains us.
Jesus Christ shows us the visible image of God through His life of sacrificial love.
The Holy Spirit is the “invisible and mysterious presence of God among us now.”

One of the most beautiful moments of the episode comes when Fr. Christian says that the Holy Spirit becomes visible through us. When we live lives of joy, peace, kindness, and generosity (Galatians 5:22-23), we help reveal God’s love to the world.

He also reflects on Philippians 2 and a powerful translation insight:

Jesus emptied Himself because He was God — not despite it.

That changes everything. Love, service, humility, and sacrifice aren’t just things God asks us to do. They reveal who God actually is.

The conversation also dives into:

• Why Trinity Sunday is notoriously difficult for preachers
• The “group hug of God” analogy for the Trinity
• How Pentecost and Ordinary Time are deeply connected
• An unexpectedly entertaining rabbit trail about Eucharistic Prayers

And yes… there’s also a debate about whether “earwig” or “earworm” is the correct phrase.
