What if the greatest gift you've ever received is one you've barely begun to unwrap?
This week's episode of All Set for Sunday dives into the readings for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, where Fr. Jerry Byrd reminds us that following Christ isn't about checking religious boxes—it's about allowing the grace of our baptism to transform every part of our lives.
The readings are packed with powerful themes:
- Hospitality opens the door to God's blessings (2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16). The Shunammite woman's simple generosity becomes the occasion for an unexpected miracle.
- Baptism changes everything (Romans 6:3-4, 8-11). St. Paul reminds us that we have died and risen with Christ, leaving behind our old way of life.
- Christ deserves first place (Matthew 10:37-42). Jesus' challenging words aren't about loving our families less—they're about loving Him first so that everything else finds its proper place.
One of the most moving moments of the conversation comes as Fr. Jerry shares his own baptism story. Although he didn't feel dramatically different walking out of the baptismal waters, God was already at work, quietly redirecting the course of his life toward the Catholic faith and eventually the priesthood.
It's a beautiful reminder that God's grace isn't dependent on our emotions. Baptism is not merely a symbol—it is the beginning of a new life, opening a storehouse of grace that God continually invites us to receive.
The Gospel's difficult call to "take up your cross" becomes less intimidating when we realize Jesus isn't asking us to love our families, work, or possessions less. Instead, He's inviting us to place Him first, allowing every other good thing in our lives to be rightly ordered around Him.
When Christ occupies the center of our hearts, everything else begins to fall into place.
