God isn’t asking us to have it all figured out. He’s asking us to let Him change our hearts.
This week on All Set for Sunday, Fr. Byrd joins Scott and Jeff to unpack readings centered on repentance, humility, conversion, and the freedom that comes from a life rooted in Christ.
In the Gospel, Jesus tells the story of two sons. One initially refuses his father’s request but later changes his mind and goes to work. The other says yes but never follows through (Matthew 21:28–32).
The first son reminds us of something hopeful: our first answer doesn’t have to be our final answer.
That same message appears in Ezekiel. We aren’t permanently defined by our worst choices. We can turn away from sin, choose what is right, and begin again (Ezekiel 18:25–28).
Fr. Byrd connects these readings to a few powerful reminders:
Conversion is ongoing. It’s easy to compare ourselves to someone else and think, “Well, at least I’m not as bad as…” But Christ isn’t asking us to measure ourselves against our neighbor. He’s inviting our hearts to be transformed.
Prayer has to be the foundation. Instead of fitting prayer into our busy lives, Fr. Byrd challenges us to fit our busy lives into our prayer life.
Humility makes room for God. St. Paul points us toward Christ, who “emptied himself” and humbled Himself even to death on the Cross (Philippians 2:7–8).
Faithfulness isn’t a feeling. Fr. Byrd points to St. Teresa of Calcutta, who remained faithful through years of spiritual dryness. Prayer isn’t valuable only when we feel something. It forms us to love and serve even when we don’t.
Ultimately, the Christian life isn’t about getting permission to do whatever we want. True freedom is becoming the person God created us to be, rooted in Christ and moving toward the abundant life He promises (John 10:10).
And sometimes that begins with admitting, “Lord, I said no…but I’m ready to say yes.”
