Tend the Vineyard: God Has Already Given Us What We Need

God has planted the vineyard, provided everything it needs to flourish, and entrusted it to us. So what kind of fruit are we producing?

For the Twenty seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, Fr. Patrick Hyde, O.P., joins All Set for Sunday to unpack a Gospel that hits a little closer to home than we might like. In the parable of the wicked tenants (Matthew 21:33–43), it’s easy to look at the tenants and think, Wow, those guys are terrible.

Then Fr. Patrick reminds us: we’re the tenants.

God has given each of us a vineyard, our soul, and He hasn’t left us unequipped. Through Baptism and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, God gives us what we need to grow in holiness. He also surrounds us with help: the angels, the saints, the Church, prayer, and the sacraments.

The question is whether we’ll faithfully tend what He has entrusted to us.

Fr. Patrick points to some timely guides from the Church’s calendar. St. Thérèse of Lisieux shows us how small acts done with great love can cultivate holiness. St. Francis of Assisi shows us the freedom that comes from letting go of earthly attachments and allowing ourselves to be possessed by God’s love. And the Holy Rosary teaches us to meditate on the life, death, and Resurrection of Christ so that His life can increasingly shape our own.

St. Paul gives us another practical tool: “Have no anxiety at all” but bring everything to God in prayer and thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6–7). Fr. Patrick’s challenge is beautifully simple: practice the presence of God everywhere, even in the mundane moments.

The vineyard is already planted. God is already present. Now we’re called to cooperate with His grace and bear fruit.
