God has prepared a place for you at His table. The question is: Will you accept the invitation?
This week on All Set for Sunday, Scott and Jeff welcome back Fr. Eric Johnson to unpack the readings for the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. And the theme? A heavenly banquet, an invitation we sometimes ignore, and a wedding garment that means a whole lot more than dressing for the occasion.
The Feast Is Ready. Come As You Are… But Don't Stay As You Are.
In the Gospel (Matthew 22:1–14), Jesus tells the parable of a king throwing a wedding feast for his son. The invitations go out, but the guests have other plans. Some are too busy. Others outright reject the invitation.
Sound familiar?
Fr. Eric reminds us that God's invitation is a gift, yet we often insist on doing things our own way rather than receiving what He freely offers.
And then there's that confusing part about the guest who gets kicked out for wearing the wrong clothes.
Fr. Eric connects this moment to something beautiful: our baptismal garment.
At Baptism, we're clothed in white and called to carry that garment unstained into eternal life. Accepting God's invitation isn't just about showing up. It's about allowing His grace to transform us.
A Banquet Where Suffering Doesn't Get the Last Word
The first reading (Isaiah 25:6–10a) paints a breathtaking picture of heaven: a feast where God destroys death and wipes away every tear.
Fr. Eric explains that this promise is especially powerful in moments of grief. God doesn't simply meet us in life's joyful moments. He comes to us precisely where we're hurting.
And here's the beautiful connection: Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, we're already participating in that heavenly banquet, united with the angels and the entire Church.
Getting Ready for Sunday
As you prepare for Mass, consider:
-
Where am I ignoring God's invitation because I'm too busy doing things my way?
-
Am I living out the promises of my Baptism?
-
Do I recognize the Eucharist as a foretaste of heaven?
Because heaven's invitation isn't something we earn. It's a gift we're called to receive with joy.
