When prayer feels like a grind, Scripture says: don’t quit.
Fr. Andy Syberg joins All Set for Sunday for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, and this episode is basically a holy huddle on how to persevere in prayer even when it’s hard, dry, or distracting (yes, even during a Netflix binge).
Here are the key spiritual takeaways:
• Exodus 17 reminds us that prayer is a team sport. Moses needs Aaron and Hur to hold up his hands during battle, a powerful image of intercessory prayer and spiritual support (Exodus 17:11-12).
• The Responsorial Psalm is a mic-drop moment: “Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:2).
• In 2 Timothy, St. Paul encourages perseverance and Scripture-rootedness: “Be persistent... whether it is convenient or inconvenient” (2 Timothy 4:2).
• And in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus urges us to pray always without becoming weary, like the persistent widow who won't stop knocking until she gets justice (Luke 18:1-8).
Fr. Andy gets real about the struggle. Prayer can be tiring. We’re busy. Sometimes, we’d rather scroll than kneel. But he reminds us that God wants time with us even when we feel too tired or too distracted to give it. Just start. Set a time. Stick with it. And remember, even distracted or “car ride” prayer is still prayer. But carving out intentional time leads to deeper intimacy with God.
✨ “God humbles Himself to be with us. He’s always calling, always inviting. The King of the universe wants to spend time with you.”
