St. Ignatius of Loyola
Feast Day: July 31
Patron of: Society of Jesus, Soldiers, Educators and Education
Being bedridden from a major injury to his leg from a cannonball, Ignatius asked for books to read about his favorite topic: chivalry. The only books available were about the life of Christ and the saints. He found the stories to be unexpectedly inspiring. His reflections led to what would become Ignatian Spirituality including: the discernment of spirits, Ignatian contemplation, and the Spiritual Exercises. Eventually, Ignatius and his followers became the Society of Jesus, aka “the Jesuits.” To this day, the Society of Jesus
seek the greater glory of God, or in Latin, “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam”: AMDG.
