Part 1 - Exposition:

    • Description: This is when we take the Eucharist, which we believe is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ, and place it in a special container called a monstrance. Then, we put the monstrance on the altar for everyone to see. It's a special way for us to show that we believe Jesus is truly present with us. During Exposition, we often sing the hymn "O Salutaris Hostia", latin for "O Saving Victim",  to honor and adore Jesus present in the Eucharist.
    • Suggested Action:
      • Place the altar on the fridge or window where we'll have a special time with Jesus.
      • Carefully lay the white altar cloth over the top of the altar.Place the candles on each side of the altar.
      • Use the candle lighter to light the candles.
      • Place the monstrance in the center of the altar.
      • Place a host in the monstrance.
      • Place the kneeler in front of the altar.
      • Place the priest on the kneeler with the incense thurible nearby.
      • Put the "O Salutaris Hostia" music staff near the altar and read the lyrics or play the song below.
        • English: O saving Victim, open wide The gate of heaven to us below. Our foes press on from every side; Your aid supply, your strength bestow. To your great name be endless praise, Immortal Godhead, One in Three; O grant us endless length of days In our true native land with thee. Amen
        • Latin: O salutaris Hostia Quae caeli pandis ostium; Bella premunt hostilia, Da robur, fer auxillium. Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna gloria, Qui vitam sine termino Nobis donet in patria. Amen.

    Part 2 - Adoration:

    • Description: During this time, we gather in the church to spend time in prayer and reflection in the presence of the Eucharist. We might sit quietly, kneel, or say prayers. It's a time for us to be close to Jesus and express our love and devotion to Him.
    • Suggested Action:
      • Move the "O Salutaris Hostia" music staff away from the altar to quiet our hearts for prayer time.
      • Sit or kneel quietly near the altar. Fold your hands and close your eyes, like we do when we pray.
      • Talk to Jesus like you would talk to a friend or parent. Tell him about your day.
      • Tell Jesus what you're grateful for, thank him for the gifts in your life.
      • Listen to some praise and worship songs.
      • Read from scripture.

    Part 3 - Benediction:

    • Description: Towards the end of adoration, we have a special blessing called Benediction. The priest or deacon uses the monstrance to bless us with the Eucharist. It's like receiving a special blessing from Jesus Himself. During Benediction, we continue to sing the hymn "Tantum Ergo" as a way to prepare for and respond to the blessing.
    • Suggested Action:
      • Move the "Tantum Ergo" music staff near the altar and say the lyrics or listen to the song in the video below.
        • English: Down in adoration falling, This great Sacrament we hail; Over ancient forms of worship Newer rites of grace prevail; Faith will tell us Christ is present, When our human senses fail. To the everlasting Father, And the Son who made us free, And the Spirit, God proceeding From them Each eternally, Be salvation, honor, blessing, Might and endless majesty. Amen.
        • Latin: Tantum ergo Sacramentum Veneremur cernui, Et antiquum documentum Novo cedat ritui; Praestet fides supplementum Sensuum defectfui. Genitori Gentioque Laus et jubilatio, Salus, honor, virtus quoque Sit et benedictio; Procedenti ab utroque Compar sit laudatio. Amen.

    • Move the "Tantom Ergo" music staff to the side and place the "Divine Praises" words near the altar.
    • Recite the Divine Praises. You can say them together or an adult can say them and you can repeat after them:
      • Blessed be God.
        Blessed be His Holy Name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man.
Blessed be the Name of Jesus.
Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart.
Blessed be His Most Precious Blood.
Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most Holy.
Blessed be her Holy and Immaculate Conception.
        Blessed be her Glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the Name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.
Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse.
Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints.
        Amen.

    Part 4 - Reposition:

    • Description: After Benediction, the Eucharist is returned to the tabernacle, which is a special place where we keep the consecrated hosts for use in Mass and for adoration outside of Mass. This marks the end of our time of adoration, but we can still carry the peace and blessings we received with us as we leave the church.
    • Suggested Action:
      • Now you can carefully clear off the altar until the next time of prayer begins!
      • Take a moment to say goodbye to Jesus and thank Him for our time together. Remember, Jesus is always with us, even when we can't see Him!
