St. Peter, originally named Simon, began his life as a humble fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. It was during one of his fishing trips that he encountered Jesus for the first time. Jesus asked Peter to cast his nets into deeper waters, and when Peter obeyed, he returned with an astonishingly full catch. In this moment, Jesus called him to a greater mission, saying, “From now on you will be catching men.” This marked the beginning of Peter’s role as a central figure in teaching and evangelizing for the Church.
Peter became one of the twelve apostles and witnessed many pivotal moments in Jesus’ ministry. Most notably, he was the first of the apostles to see Christ after His Resurrection. Recognizing Peter’s faith and devotion, Jesus entrusted him with a new name, Peter—meaning “Rock”—symbolizing his foundational role in the Church. Jesus also gave Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven, declaring, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.” As the first Pope and leader of the apostles, St. Peter played an essential role in spreading the Gospel and establishing the early Christian Church, leaving a lasting legacy of faith and leadership.
