God’s Love Is Stronger Than Death

Even death can’t stop divine love, and that’s Good News worth celebrating.

This Sunday, we mark a rare liturgical occasion: All Souls Day falls on a Sunday, which only happens about once every seven years. That means our Mass readings shift to reflect a powerful truth: God's mercy doesn't stop at the grave. Fr. James Brockmeier joins us to unpack how this Solemnity points to hope, healing, and the incredible gift of purgatory (yes, you read that right).

Here are the key takeaways from the episode:

  • Wisdom 3:1–9 reminds us that “the souls of the just are in the hand of God.” Though tested by fire, they shine like gold, proof that God’s love is stronger than death.

  • Psalm 23 brings comfort and confidence: “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

  • Romans 5:5–11 offers a jolt of joy: “Hope does not disappoint,” because Christ died for us while we were still sinners. His love is bottomless and unconditional.

  • John 6:37–40 gives us Jesus’ own promise: “I shall not lose anything of what He gave me... I shall raise it on the last day.”

Fr. James also shares a beautifully clear explanation of purgatory.
Sin doesn’t just make us guilty it forms us. Even after absolution, we might still be “attached” to our old sins. That’s where purgatory comes in. Not as a punishment, but as a place of healing where God’s grace prepares us for heaven.
