Doubt, Mercy, and the Windows We Break

He Is Risen.. Now What? Reading Doubt, Mercy, and the Windows We Break 2 minutes Next He Was There the Whole Time

What if God’s mercy is bigger than both your doubts and your mess?

The Second Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday, invites us into a powerful truth: Jesus meets us right where we are… even behind locked doors and stubborn doubt.

This week’s readings paint a vivid picture of the Christian life:

Radical community The early Church “devoted themselves… to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42). Faith wasn’t solo, it was shared, lived, and visible.
Refined by trials St. Peter reminds us that our struggles refine our faith like gold (1 Peter 1:7). Nothing is wasted in God’s hands.
Faith beyond sight Jesus tells Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29).

Fr. Byrd zeroes in on a theme we don’t always talk about at brunch: indulgences, especially the plenary indulgence available on Divine Mercy Sunday.

In simple terms, an indulgence is God’s way of healing the aftereffects of sin, the “broken windows” we still need to repair, even after forgiveness. Confession restores the relationship; indulgences help restore the damage.

And here’s the heart of it: God wants your healing more than you do.

That’s why the Church gives us concrete ways to receive grace:
• Be in a state of grace (hello, Confession!)
• Receive the Eucharist
• Pray for the Holy Father’s intentions
• Spend time meditating on Divine Mercy

It’s not about checking boxes, it’s about opening your heart.

Then there’s Thomas. Honest. Skeptical. A little stubborn. Maybe a lot like us.

Yet Jesus doesn’t shame him. He meets him. Invites him closer.
And Thomas responds with one of the most powerful professions of faith in Scripture:
“My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)

That’s Divine Mercy:
God stepping into your doubt, your wounds, your questions, and saying, “Peace be with you.”
